Who am I?
I am Detric Leggett, your Alderman for the Second District of Savannah, Georgia. I am a proud family man, married to Lenaida Green-Leggett, and a father to five wonderful children, three biological and two by marriage. I am also a mentor to many young people who look up to me.
I was born to Linda Harris and the late Eddie Leggett, and I am a proud 1993 graduate of Savannah High School. Go Bluejackets! I have been a dedicated worker at MEMORIAL Health for 25 years, serving in the operating room.
My faith plays a significant role in my life. I am a 35-year member of the Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, the only African American evangelical church in the southeast under the leadership of Pastor JJ Sanders.
Beyond my professional and religious life, I am deeply involved in our community. I coach young men and women in the Savannah Bears Elite football team and the 2018 city champion Oglethorpe Academy football team. My passion for football extends beyond the field as I strive to instill discipline, teamwork, and resilience in our young people.
As a community organizer and activist, I have always been at the forefront, addressing the needs and concerns of all people. I first ran for public office in 2015, seeking a seat on the Savannah City Council and then the County Commission of Chatham County. My campaigns have energized the electorate and inspired more people to become active in our community.
I am widely respected for my work with the End Gun Violence program. I have used child-size coffins in public meetings as a stark reminder of the constant loss of life among our young people and the urgent need to create programs that will save our youth. I have also worked to defuse potentially violent situations at crime scenes.
In my ongoing commitment to serve, I am the chairman of the Citizens Advisory Board at the Chatham County Jail, ensuring the rights of inmates, staff, and families serviced by the jail are upheld.
My work in the community has been recognized by multiple groups and government agencies. Among the accolades I have received are the MLK Drum Major Award and a proclamation from the Georgia House of Representatives.
In my most recent bid for public service, I ran for Savannah City Council and was elected with over 60% of the vote. I am now proudly serving as the Alderman for the Second District of Savannah, Georgia. I am committed to making a difference in our community and look forward to serving you.
